A significant distinction for Assistant Professor Alexandros Stefanakis of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete: the research project he participated in Oman was awarded the National Research Award 2021 by the The Research Council of the country in the Environmental and Biological Resources Section.
The project had to do with the design and construction of a nature-based solution, i.e., a Vertical Flow Constructed Wetland, to optimize its performance in terms of total nitrogen removal in order to allow for the reuse of the treated effluent in agriculture and close the loop of water. The project was also the thesis of the PhD student Buthaina Al-wahaibi at the Sultan Qaboos University.
The project was implemented in cooperation with Haya Water, the Oman Water and Wastewater Services Company, and its results have been published in Journal of Cleaner Production.
